When to go and what to bring

The trail is open all year, but the season and time of day make a bigger difference than your fitness.

Best time of year

  • April to early June: the best time. Mild temperatures, green hillsides and wildflowers.
  • July and August: hot, bright and busy, with little shade on the path. If this is when you’re here, start on the first morning bus.
  • Late September to October: warm sea light, cooler walking and fewer people. A strong second choice.
  • Winter: the trail stays open, but rain makes the stone slippery, and cloud can hide the view you came for. Check the forecast.

What to bring

  • Shoes with grip. Trail shoes or hiking boots, not sandals or smooth trainers. The path is rocky and uneven.
  • Water. Carry at least a litre and a half per person. You can refill at Bomerano, Colle La Serra and Nocelle.
  • Sun protection: hat, sunscreen and sunglasses
  • Snacks or a picnic. Don’t count on buying food along the way.
  • Bus tickets bought in advance, and a photo of the current timetable
  • Cash for a drink in Nocelle

Staying safe

  • Some stretches run beside steep drops with no railing. Keep children close and take the less exposed 327a variant at Colle La Serra if you’re unsure. See the route.
  • Stay on the marked path. Short cuts on loose ground are where people slip.
  • Give way to mules and goats, and don’t approach working dogs guarding livestock
  • Avoid the trail in storms or strong wind
  • In an emergency, call 112, the EU emergency number

Crowds

On spring and summer weekends, lots of people walk the Path of the Gods. Starting early or walking on a weekday makes a real difference, both on the narrow sections and for the view at Nocelle.

Common questions

How fit do I need to be?

Reasonably. If you can walk for two to three hours on uneven ground, you’ll be fine. The steep steps down from Nocelle to Positano are the hardest part for most people, and you can take the bus instead.

Can I do the hike and still see Positano the same day?

Yes. With a morning start from Amalfi, you can be in Positano by early afternoon.
